volunteer now
For 30+ years we’ve had volunteers by our side doing the work necessary to support people experiencing homelessness in Berkeley. Below are just some of the ways you can make a difference.
help prepare meals
Our kitchen is always buzzing as we make 500+ meals a day for our unhoused neighbors. From 7am to 6pm, you can find a 2-hour shift that needs your help chopping, stirring, assembling, dishwashing, cleaning, and serving meals.
organize our community closet
We receive generous donations of clothing, shoes, hygiene products, and more from the community. We need your help to sort, size and organize it so our unhoused neighbors can easily find whatever they need.
join in grassroots outreach
Saturdays you can help us partner with Christ Church in Berkeley and serve breakfast to our unhoused neighbors. Wednesdays you can help host a pop-up pantry in our main shelter parking lot and distribute to-go bags of items that may include water, shelf-stable food and personal care supplies to anyone in need.
participate in our summer teen program
High school students are invited to spend a week of their summer with us to experience operating a non-profit organization. This is a great community service opportunity for students to gain insight into our local unhoused community as well as see what it’s like to work in social services.
2026 Applications will open in early March.
pitch in at Dorothy’s Closet
Our thrift shop needs volunteers to help process donations and run our retail space. Join us!
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Dorothy Day House!
We are temporarily pausing our volunteer intake. Please check back mid March.
In the meantime, there are still lots of ways to support:
