volunteer now

For 34+ years we’ve had volunteers by our side doing the work necessary to support people experiencing homelessness in Berkeley. Below are just some of the ways you can make a difference.

help prepare meals

Our kitchen is always buzzing. We make 745+ meals a day for our unhoused neighbors and shelter residents. From 7am to 5:30 pm, you can join a 2-hour shift and help prep, cook and serve meals.

organize our community closet

We receive generous donations of clothing, shoes, bedding, personal care products, and more from our community. Come help sort and organize it so our unhoused neighbors can easily find whatever they may need.

join in grassroots outreach

Saturdays we partner with Christ Church in Berkeley from 9 am - noon. Meet in their kitchen on Cedar Street to cook breakfast and then head out to encampments to serve it with coffee. On Wednesdays we host a pop-up pantry in our main shelter parking lot from 12:30 - 1:15 pm. Anyone in need can come get water, shelf-stable food and personal care items.

participate in our summer teen program

High school students are invited to spend a week of their summer with us to gain experience supporting the operation of a non-profit organization. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain insight into our local unhoused community as well as see what it’s like to work in social services.

pitch in at Dorothy’s Closet

Our thrift shop, Dorothy’s Closet, needs volunteers to help process clothing donations and run our retail space. Join us!
