May We Introduce You?

Updated: Nov 19, 2021

Brit Hotaling, our Director of Development and Marketing joined Dorothy Day House in July 2020. Her job entails handling Dorothy Day House communications and providing support to those who support us. From an early age, she knew what she wanted to spend her life doing – making the world a better place.

"I organized my first fundraiser when I was ten years old," she says with a laugh, "My career since then has been pretty inevitable."

Originally from New York, Hotaling began to specialize in Development after working for a disaster relief organization organizing special events as an AmeriCorps VISTA. From there, she went on to work for an environmentally focused nonprofit.

"I had never worked for a for-profit organization, and I was not entirely sure what I wanted to do. So I took a year-long sabbatical to work in commercial sales. It was not my cup of tea," she explained, "I was lucky enough to find a job in human services relatively quickly."

"After about 12 years of trial and error, I realized I wanted to work for a direct service organization,” Hotaling says, "It seemed to be kismet - once I had made my decision, I came across a job listing for Dorothy Day House."

Having received her Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential in November 2021, Hotaling credits her dedication to her field as a mix of personal and environmental motivation.

“Philanthropy means, quite literally, ‘love of humankind.’ I think of it as a reminder, and motivator, particularly considering the last couple of years. Amid so much chaos and despair, there was an incredible outpouring of support, love, and concern for the vulnerable. I feel so humbled and inspired that I have the privilege of supporting that in some small way.”

"It has always been important to me that I live my values,” Hotaling continued, “My dedication to developing organizations started with myself first."

When she is not at work, Hotaling can often be found outside, whether going for a hike, camping, or enjoying a festival. She has a diverse set of hobbies and interests and can usually be found playing with her pet cat and dog.
